Remote kitchen planning can help keep your kitchen project moving forward from the comfort of your home. Schedule a convenient, free virtual appointment now to discuss your project with a professional IKEA kitchen planner. With both, you can choose furniture, accessories, and even art to hang on the virtual walls. Rotate and move items about, and swap out colors to get your perfect palette. You can also see the room from different perspectives—get a bird's eye view of the room, and see it in a "dollhouse" style. These features reminded me of what you'd see on HGTV when a designer is creating a room, so I found it cool to see my own designs like that.

Roomstyler is very much a community-based kitchen planner where you can interact with and learn from other users, and there are every regularly-held design contests you can participate in. Ikea kitchen ideas are wonderfully flexible, offering the chance to create infinite layouts and kitchen storage ideas as well as an array of different looks, from sleek modern kitchen ideas to classic country. Because what’s better than watching kitchen doors transform from BROKHULT to RINGHULT? Don’t forget to plan for your walking and working space. When you’re set on cooking the finest cuisine in your kitchen, you need to have room to hustle.

Plan and design your kitchen

So, always check what devices a software supports before subscribing. While some people want to just create kitchen designs that they can then send to contractors for the building, many people also like to both design and create kitchen elements themselves. If you’re in the latter group, Sketchlist 3D has all the tools you need.

Lastly, the finishing touches – they sealed the joints and gaps, added legs and plinths, made sure the doors were aligned, opened and closed properly, etc. Even, packed up all the carton boxes and hauled them away. I wanted to cross check them against my Order List to make sure they sent everything, but the little hill of 158 boxes was beyond me.

When it comes to designing your own 3D kitchen, you can use over 12,000 items and furniture pieces from popular brands like John Lewis, Nest, and Mark & Spencer. This allows you to choose and combine different fronts, countertops and styles and tailor the design to your liking, and then get a rough cost estimate based on your choices. If you are customizing your Ikea kitchen with specialist doors or panels, then it is worth noting that most of these elements are designed for self-assembly. In this space, the homeowners inherited the fitted kitchen cabinets but have added Ikea's RIMFORSA workbench to provide extra food preparation space and to help divide the kitchen area from the sitting area.

Step 4: Install

If you’re designing for the first time, you should start off with easy, free online software like Planner 5D, while more experienced designers will benefit from the more advanced functions of programs like SketchUp. As is the case with all software, high quality graphics typically come at a price when designing kitchens online. If you’re just creating designs for yourself, you may want to save some cash and go for a free kitchen design software with basic graphics.

IKEA is pretty clear on what it will and won’t do for your kitchen design. Notice that they don’t give you a kitchen design like IKD will. They give you a “kitchen cabinet layout.”There’s a really big difference between those two things.

The only way for IKEA to design my kitchen was using the IKEA Home Planner app. Right now they’re offering the deal that if you buy that service and then buy your kitchen before August 1, 2016, they will refund you the cost of the service. IKEA has been catering to stylish DIYers for fifty years, so it’s no surprise the IKEA Kitchen Planner is a fan favorite for its easy, quick-start browser interface, user-friendly terminology and clean design. There’s still lots of cleaning and some touching up to do.

The right “Options” sidebar are the main customisation tool. If you’re using the IKEA Home Planner for the first time, you’ll need to create a profile so you can save your work. Once you’ve done that, the fun (and hair pulling) begins. Then, I went to IKEA and watched the pros — the IKEA Kitchen Specialists — use it and picked up a few tricks. After that, the IKEA Kitchen Planner played nice with me and it quickly became my favourite night time activity.

Experts agree that this is a useful design software that you should try when you’re planning your home. Sketchlist 3D is specifically designed for both creating 3D CAD models and then creating them through CNC woodworking. It has a variety of tools to help with this – for example, if you’re looking for a kitchen design software with cutting lists, Sketchlist 3D has got you covered. Hugely popular, Scandinavian kitchen ideas are characterized by their sleek, simple design, abundance of light and liberal use of wood. In this Ikea kitchen idea, Studio 163 has successfully channelled the Scandinavian look by opting for Ikea cabinets faced with FSC-certified birch plywood doors from Plykea.

Without these elements, your kitchen design will suffer. Regardless, IKEA's kitchen planner is a great starting point. Another nice feature of this kitchen design software with measurements is the Cabinet Wizard.

Michelle ordered fluted wood panels cut to size from The Surface Studio then simply glued them to the Ikea EKESTAD door fronts for the length of the kitchen island. 'I used the HITTARP fronts for the long wall and had them all professionally sprayed in Farrow & Ball's Inchyra Blue,' she adds. 'For the Nook House we chose to have an Ikea kitchen with bespoke fronts. It enabled to design something creative while being mindful of budget without compromising the quality of the kitchen,' says Lea Grange of Studio 163. My fiancee and I have a large kitchen, so two hours of measuring time sounded good.

This software is flexible and provides you with control over all the key elements, including room dimensions and cabinetry, and allows you to view your designs in professional-grade renderings. You can then furnish your kitchen plan with a variety of pre-built models, and edit the colors, patterns, materials and more. This saves you time because you immediately know what to look for when using the planner. Planning your kitchen is when your dreams and ideas take shape. Take your time to make sure you end up with the kitchen you wished for. Think about how you normally use your kitchen and what feels comfortable for you.

Create a contrast with different cabinet finishes

Planner 5D offers all kinds of advanced features — 2D plans, 3D designs, even a “snapshot” filter that adds realistic lighting and shadows to your plans. Next post I’ll show you what I plan to do on two of my METOD kitchen cabinet doors. I’ll be adding a command centre to them to organise my weekly plan meals, groceries and bills all in one place. This kitchens buying guide will help you through all the steps you need to take along the way, including everything from finding your style and measuring your IKEA kitchen to planning and ordering it. You don’t have to be a "Master of Planning" to create your dream kitchen with our new powerful planning ingredient – the Kitchen Planner.

This allows you to quickly and easily customize pre-built models in terms of size, thickness, clearances, doors and drawers. This is a nice and simple way to create furniture for your kitchen that you can then make yourself. Planner 5D is one of the most popular kitchen design software with a community of over 82 million amateur designers, and it’s easy to see why. Despite being a very intuitive and high quality tool, the creators have made it almost entirely free (the only exception being if you want to access the entire design catalog).

IKEA Kreativ is a fun, interactive way to experiment with design. And while it doesn't replace working with an interior designer, it's an easy way to discover your style, and if you see something you love (like I did!), purchase it then and there. I'd recommend if you're redoing your space or simply a design lover looking to pass an afternoon (or two, if you want to redesign your whole house). Planner 5D is probably the best free app for kitchen design as it’s high quality, available on iOS and Android, and is almost completely free (you only need to pay if you want full access to the model library). 3D design programs are typically paid (thought most have a free trial) and require some training to get to grips with. The best software used by professional designers also allow you to create high quality renderings that you can share with colleagues and clients.

Ikea 3D Kitchen Planner is a very simple yet smart and well-designed kitchen planning tool that’s completely free to use. It’s online-based, allowing you to access it in seconds without having to download anything. With their timeless simple design and textured wood veneer, these doors and drawer fronts have a lovely traditional feel, while the black stained finish brings a touch of sophistication and drama. An oak kitchen countertop idea oiled with Rubio Monocoat oil Plus 2c adds to the country feel and really shines when set against the black kitchen cabinets, as do the brass door handles. Sturdy and affordable, Ikea kitchens are also a great base for adding custom elements.

This varies a lot – there are high quality kitchen design software like Planner 5D available for free, but paid programs can range anywhere from $10 to over $100 a month. There are quite a few free kitchen design software out there, but if you’re looking for a top quality program with 3D modeling capabilities, then you need to find one that fits your budget. Luckily, most software have free trials, so you can use this to trial programs before stumping up any cash. Many kitchen design software are only compatible with certain operating systems. Programs like Planner 5D that are available on all major platforms are an exception. If you’re using a Mac or Android device, however, your options are going to be slightly limited, although Sketchlist 3D and Roomstyler are still good options.

IKEA furnishes you with the confidence that work is coming, equips you with the competence to handle volume, and pays into your account like clockwork. Contact our home furnishing experts to help you get started with creating the perfect solution. Next week I’ll write about how the service actually went. The guy I talked to was very hands-off and he didn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Mercer House Savannah, Georgia

mercer williams house

Located a few miles from Savannah’s otherwise-walkable downtown, Bonaventure is best visited by car or on a tour. The Mercer-Williams House Museum, while open to the public, is not highly excited about the home’s ghostly reputation, as well their association with the novel, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The current owner of the house, Dr. Dorothy Kingery (Williams' sister) is usually rather tight-lipped when it comes to stories about her notorious brother, and even more dismissive when it comes to paranormal activity at the house. In fact, she claims to have never had any experience of the supernatural kind.

The Ghosts of the Mercer-Williams House

But, five years later, reports of parties being held at the house began sprouting about. However, this is Savannah, one of the most haunted cities in the country. The biggest single event in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and maybe in the entire history of the house was the murder of Danny Lewis Hansford.

Drinking Tours

While 429 Bull Street certainly has all the makings of a haunted house, the current owner (and Williams's sister), Dorothy Kingery, focuses museum tours on the fabulous antiques and architectural details rather than any hauntings. That doesn't stop the ghost stories about the house from circulating, though. The Mercer House was designed by New York architect John S. Norris for General Hugh W. Mercer, great grandfather of Johnny Mercer. Construction of the house began in 1860, was interrupted by the Civil War and was later completed, circa 1868, by the new owner, John Wilder.

The Ghost of the Young Boy

Much like the well-maintained streets and squares, the homes throughout the city's historic district are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Their endurance is thanks to preservation efforts in the city, which gained a lot of traction in the 1960s—when famed restorationist and antique collector Jim Williams came to town. Williams's own former home at 429 Bull Street, which takes up the entire city block of Monterey square, is one of the most spectacular in Savannah. But in true Southern Gothic fashion, if you peel back the layers of historic charm, you'll find something sinister lurking underneath... Dr. Nathan Myrick, assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies, presented “Hardcore Hospitality at Furnace Fest” at the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association summit in Atlanta on March 22.

Museum tickets and entry are located behind the main house at 430 Whitaker Street. Although it’s rare, sometimes you can still find copies signed by the author at those two locations. The book by Dr. Kingery focuses on the many homes that Jim Williams preserved, both in Savannah and throughout the Lowcountry. I always thought she was generous to share her incredible home with visitors, and I appreciated her entrepreneurial spirit for capitalizing on all the hoopla surrounding the house.

The tantalizing stories that unfolded behind its brick and plaster walls have benefitted the city of Savannah and its residents for decades — and there’s no end in sight. The windows of the basement level mirror the size of the window immediately above.

Imagine, you just got back from Walgreens Photo, and you're flipping through all the pictures you took while on your trip. Then, finally, you get to the photos of the Mercer-Williams House, and you once again find yourself marveling at just how majestic the home really is, but as you examine the photo more closely, it happens . His soul was clearly unable to move own, while the man who had killed him lived on as a free man. Which could be possible, especially when considering Williams' lifeless body was discovered in almost the same spot in which Danny had been shot dead, nearly a decade earlier. It's been alleged that Williams became so distraught by Hansford's lurking spirits, that he reached out to a voodoo practitioner to rid Hansford soul from the house. According to some, they do not believe the voodoo practitioner's cleansing of the house worked, as in their minds, it was the ghost of Danny Hansford who killed Jim Williams.

She did that to prevent people from using images of the home to promote tours and things of that nature. Jim Williams’ sister, Dr. Dorothy Williams Kingery, owned the home for decades after his death — although she came about it in a convoluted way. Since Williams was known for throwing large parties, and he particularly loved his elaborate Christmas Gala, visitors sometimes report seeing ghosts celebrating the holiday season at the Mercer House during the month of December. Many years after Wilder’s death there was a period of time where it was vacant.

The tragic events that have occurred throughout the Mercer-Williams House's history are a clear indication as to why the house is said to be haunted. The young lad was impaled (in the skull, no less!) on the beautiful wrought iron fence surrounding the property. The property includes a rather large carriage house and a beautiful private courtyard.

Students recently presented the beginnings of this work at Mercer’s BEAR Day. Their paper was published in the conference proceedings, Psychological Applications and Trends 2024. By this point you clearly must be itching to visit this unquestionably haunted house.

Using a symmetrical interior shape, Norris combined 15 foot ceilings with floor length windows to elongate the structure. It is also anchored with a 60 foot entrance hall that retains its original ceramic tile made in England at Stoke-on-Trent. The house and carriage house are both constructed with deep rose-colored bricks called ‘Philadelphia Reds’. Many of Jim Williams's antiques and furnishings were sold by his sister at a Sotheby's auction on October 20, 2000.[1][24] Where their locations in the house were known, they are mentioned in the relevant section below. The first floor has a double door with a French window on each side; the second floor has three windows and one door in the middle.[23] The section without a window is where the ballroom organ is installed. Mercer House (now the Mercer Williams House Museum) is located at 429 Bull Street in Savannah, Georgia.[3] Completed in 1868, it occupies the southwestern civic block of Monterey Square.

Like many of the historic houses in Savannah, there have been reports of paranormal activity at the Mercer-Williams. These reports usually include commonalities like apparitions, disembodied voices, phantom footsteps and that unnerving feeling that someone is watching you. About six months after his not guilty verdict, Williams, who was at home stricken with pneumonia, died from heart failure. He allegedly collapsed to his death near the spot were Hansford was shot dead.

The park also features a children’s play area, walking paths and fragrant gardens. Forsyth Park hosts a weekly farmers market as well as outdoor movies and concerts. As you move to the upstairs dressing room you will find nine Henrietta Johnston pastels dated back to the early 1700s, and an intricately carved mahogany four-poster bed. Mahogany definitely has a place in the home, the 1770 mahogany sofa is its own work of art. Six months later, after years of investigations, court dates, and finally, a not guilty verdict, Jim Williams died in his palatial home of heart failure. Allegedly, he collapsed near the spot where Danny had been shot and killed.

The Jim Williams Era

Once the home of Jim Williams, it was also the location of Danny Hansford's death and William's final days. Best-selling novel, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" explores the life of prominent Savannah socialite Jim Williams, and the murder of his lover Danny Hansford. Take a walk in the shoes of the true life characters and Savannah residents that know the story all too well. Now it’s time to immerse yourself in Savannah - the quintessential location of where it all happened. When you enter the Mercer Williams House it becomes obvious that a home of this scale would have nothing less than a scandalous history.

BOOK ACCOMMODATIONS

Construction of the French Gothic-style Cathedral of St. John the Baptist began in 1873. The oldest Catholic church in Georgia, it was designed by Baldwin and Price. The building features bronze-colored iron columns, double-barrel vault arches and stained glass windows imported from Tyrol, Austria. Her Uncle Jimmy and the house played major roles in John Berendt’s 1994 book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. But that’s just part of the story.“It certainly has brought people to this beautiful city and (especially in the ‘90s) brought a ton of national attention,” says Kingery of “The Book” as it’s still known to many around Savannah. In 1969, Jim Williams, one of Savannah's earliest and most dedicated private restorationists, bought the then-vacant house and began a two-year restoration.

College of Education

Except for the window above the double front doors, each French window on the three open sides of the house has a balcony surrounded by an iron railing. Each window on the first and second levels of these three open sides is crowned with a sculptural hood mold of cast iron.[2] A classical portico,[22] with two columns at each of the front corners, covers the front doors. Both sets of columns are adjoined at their bases (the base on the left is adorned with a plaque denoting the year construction on the house was begun; the right, the home's number).

In this story:

The María Merced Williams and John Rains House, built in 1860, has a history as colorful as the property’s gardens. Namesakes Rains and Merced, granddaughter of the prominent landowner Don Antonio Maria Lugo, built the home to withstand the hot inland Southern California climate, and of course to entertain. The home featured multiple large rooms and guest quarters as well as an open flume that carried water from springs through the kitchen and into the patio under the house to the orchard, providing water to the plants and cooling the home. Savannah’s version of New York City’s Central Park, the 30-acre Forsyth Park, is the largest green space located in the city’s historic district.

It will no doubt prove popular with Robbie and Ayda, who had a similar gym in their former LA home which they recently sold to Drake.

The property has a panelled foyer with a spiral staircase and inlaid wood floor. It leads through to the living room and formal dining room, and provides an impressive entrance to the house. And include site tours, frontier arts and crafts, historic demonstrations and more. After his acquittal in 1989, Williams threw his last lavish Christmas party before his death (less than a month later on January 14, 1990).

When tour guides spin tales about the house, they claim Williams was haunted by Hansford’s ghost once he returned home to the Mercer Williams House. Make note that there are multiple missing spikes, but the one in question is on the south-facing side of the home. In 1969, James A. Williams, one of Savannah’s earliest and most dedicated private preservationists, bought the vacant property and began a two-year restoration of the house that would become his permanent residence. Mr. Williams restored more than 50 buildings during his 30-year career in historic preservation in Savannah and the Low-country. In total, there are 40 windows (including the basement level) and eight iron balconies.

Georgia on Your Mind?

The house was designed for General Hugh Weedon Mercer by architect John S. Norris. Norris was New York born and raised (on the playgrounds he spent most of his days), before coming to Savannah where he enjoyed success in building houses, churches and lighthouses throughout the area. In 1860, ground was broken on the Mercer property, but construction was halted due to the Civil War. As for Norris himself, he quickly moved back to his home state just before the war began. If there can only be one house in all of Savannah that is to be considered the city's most mysterious, that distinction would have to go to the Mercer-Williams House. In its many years of existence, the Mercer-Williams House has seen many tragedies, and the people who have called it home quite possibly have been more affected by hauntings than any other citizen of Savannah.

Curious to learn all the details of the Mercer-Williams house and why it's one of the most haunted homes in the country? Listen to episode 4 of our podcast, Dark House, for the full story and an exclusive interview with comedian, celebrity barber, paranormal investigator, and reality TV host, Marcus Harvey, who tells us about his spooky experiences in Savannah and beyond. The full story of the Mercer-Williams house is featured in episode 4 of House Beautiful’s new haunted house podcast, Dark House. Dr. Anthony Choi and Dr. Hunmin Kim led a team of 14 students on a research trip to St. Louis as part of the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project for NASA. The project, organized by NASA, stationed 53 teams of students along the path of the eclipse, providing them with opportunities to capture data and conduct experiments.

Jim Williams was a well-respected antiques dealer and preservationist, who had a deep appreciation for Savannah's history and architecture. Williams bought and restored over 50 houses in Savannah over thirty-five years. He spent two years renovating the Mercer Williams House, as it had fallen into disrepair from years of neglect. During a period of time in the twentieth century, the house was home to the Savannah's Shriners Alee Temple. After the Shriners' tenure, the house rested in a vacant state for nearly ten years before it finally found a new owner in 1969. I live just south of Forsyth Park in Savannah's artsy Starland District, and my daughter is a recent SCAD graduate.

Construction began in 1860 and was subsequently interrupted by the Civil War. It was eventually completed in 1868, after General Mercer sold the unfinished structure to John R. Wilder. Thus, no Mercer ever actually lived in the house that bears their name.

The three-story Italianate home, inspired by the farmhouses in northern Italy, is red-brick with a lovely courtyard and a carriage house. Taking up an entire city block, it's iron railing surrounds three sides of the home with a brick wall on the fourth side. With forty windows, eight iron balconies, and a classical portico, the Mercer Williams House is an example of classical architectural detail. Kingery's daughter and Williams's niece, Dorothy Susan Kingery,[7] manages the museum,[8] which is based out of the carriage house at the rear of the property. Draped in Spanish moss, studded with quaint cobblestone roads, and illuminated by old-world street lamps, every street in Savannah, Georgia, feels like a time capsule buzzing with romance and history.

He spent decades collecting beautiful items from Europe, New York and around the U.S. Please check your meter as it varies depending on which portion of the district you park in. As I’ve already mentioned, I live in Savannah and get to explore the city on a daily basis. (Lucky me!) I’m always honored when I’m able to help visitors plan their trips. Those who know me, know I tend to sympathize with the owners of notable homes in Savannah who get very little privacy due to all the looky loos trying to get a peek inside.

Roadtrippers helps you find the most epic destinations and detours—from roadside attractions to natural wonders and beyond. John Berendt’s 1994 non-fiction novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and its film adaptation 3 years later, is credited with nearly doubling the tourism industry in Savannah, Georgia. Nearly 30 years after it was published (and spent 216 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list), Berendt’s vivid storytelling and the lush, on-location Southern vistas in Clint Eastwood’s film continue to beckon travelers to Georgia’s northern coast. During Jim Williams tenure as owner of the house, everyone in town knew that he threw the grandest parties in Savannah. Specifically, his Christmas parties became the stuff of legend, as his Christmas party was the social event of the year.

The living room is spacious and flooded with sunlight courtesy of large windows on either side. With a fireplace at the centre, hardwood flooring and artisan touches throughout, it's clear to see why Robbie and Ayda will have been captivated by the space. What’s more, avoiding these backyard mistakes can help to make your backyard look bigger and will make your space more inviting. So before you set about transforming your outdoor space, be sure to avoid these backyard design mistakes, and enjoy your summer. Backyard designers know how to design everything from a zero lot to a sprawling backyard. If you want to entertain guests, renovate the property for a sale, or make your yard look bigger, designers can plan it to the last square foot. Local backyard designers also know which plants are the hardiest for easy maintenance and low water usage.

Not a trellis and not a gazebo, a pergola is a distinct structure that can stand alone or attach to the side of your home (though permits may be required). Known for its vertical columns and crossbeams, a pergola is a stunning addition to backyard landscaping. It can provide shade with a fabric canopy or climbing plants, offer an elegant place to sit or mingle, and has a beauty that no other structure captures. Flower-filled gardens are lovely, but flower beds and pots give your backyard landscaping a little something extra. Elevated flower beds are kinder to the back muscles, with less bending required to prune, plant, and maintain. Flower beds can be placed in areas where they’ll get the right amount of sun, which may lead to more thriving flower gardens.

The clean lines of modern homes translate well into modern landscaping ideas. Mirror the shape of structures and features around your home within your backyard landscaping. This creates a cohesive aesthetic that flows well throughout your indoor and outdoor living spaces. With a gazebo providing shade and protecting from rain, set up a cushy area for backyard picnics. Wicker chairs, an outdoor rug, and lots of pillows and cushions create an area for relaxing outdoors. If you’re working with a large area, you can boost continuity in a space with multiple concrete features like a patio, firepit alcove, an outdoor family room, or the like. Connect them with a stamped concrete walkway made to look like tile, pavers, stone or whatever else suits your personal design. A covered area will feel more like a room, so it’s important to make sure there is a focal point that draws you and guests to the area.

If you have an existing backyard design you would like to improve, you can import it into the backyard design tool in seconds and draw your new design on top of the old one. In minutes, draw the lawn and backyard outdoor living space and select symbols to represent trees, decks, patios, and more. House hacking helps some buyers overcome financial challenges

This compensation may influence the selection, appearance, and order of appearance on this site. The information provided by Quicken Loans does not include all financial services companies or all of their available product and service offerings. Article content appears via license from original author or content owner, including Rocket Mortgage. And so, as a house hacker, you’ll use the same structure you’d use for residential real estate.

House hacking: 5 key strategies to be successful

Landlords are sometimes eligible for tax deductions like mortgage interest, property taxes, maintenance costs, etc. I told all of my friends about my dream to build an additional house on my lot. One of them sent me an advertisement for CalHFA's ADU grant program that gives eligible Californians $40,000 to cover blueprints, permits, and closing costs to build an ADU on their property. The easiest way to exit from a house hack is to refinance (if you purchased the property with an FHA loan) and then move out.

Disclose the property rights

While inflation is easing, mortgage rates remain high, with the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage running in excess of 7%, placing a home loan out of reach for many consumers. While objective data from applications, background checks, and references is essential, it's also important to trust your instincts. As a landlord, you may have an intuitive sense about whether a tenant is a good fit for your property.

How To Rent Out A House: A New Landlord’s Guide

Landlord insurance might have prevented the house hackers’ complete loss in the aforementioned movie. Since you’re an on-site landlord, you don’t have to travel back and forth to the property to complete any necessary landlord duties. From your experience, you may decide to become a lifelong real estate investor. Unlike with repairs for a primary residence, expenses related to repairs and maintenance of the rental portion of the property are tax deductible. But you know there’s a recession coming and are concerned about the risk of not being able to make your mortgage payments. Having the right tenant or tenants in the house reduces the risk of default.

What Is House Hacking In Real Estate?

As another bonus, if you live in the home for at least one year you pay the lower capital gains tax rate on your profits. Live in the house for at least two years, and you avoid real estate capital gains tax altogether by taking advantage of the primary residence exclusion (Section 121 exclusion). The sheer variety of houses and housing units throughout Los Angeles is pretty remarkable. Look at those, look at bungalows, look at multi-family units and mixed building neighborhoods. This post is our data-driven deep dive into house hacking Los Angeles and breaking down the pros, cons, concerns, and benefits of house hacking in one of America’s largest cities.

How To House Hack Successfully In 5 Steps

If your goal is to eventually build a bigger real estate portfolio, this’ll give you valuable experience in vetting tenants, negotiating leases and managing a property. When searching for a home loan that’ll enable you to house hack, your main focus should be finding a loan with reasonable costs that still leaves room for you to turn a profit. You want to leave that 121 door open if you decide to sell the property.

House hacking a duplex, or another type of multifamily home, enables you to set up your own space while renting out the other unit(s). As with the in-law suite, you’ll have more separation and privacy than with a roommate. If your house has a finished basement, in-law suite or accessory dwelling unit (ADU), it can become a great income-generating property, particularly if it’s equipped with its own kitchen and bathroom. The advantage here is that you won’t need to share those spaces while still earning passive income each month.

Because the property value continued to increase each year since buying my home in 2017, I refinanced my 30-year fixed mortgage a few times before I started my ADU project. So I now have 28 years left on a $460,000 loan at a 4.8% mortgage rate that includes my existing home and the ADU. It can take a lot of work, especially when you’re just starting out. Talk to your partner or spouse and take their opinions to heart before moving forward if you’re in a relationship.

Price out how much it costs to create a basement ADU or garage apartment, just for gits and shiggles. Just make sure the local market rents and demand justify the expense, before you go through the hassle of creating a separate basement apartment. Housemates are a great way to cover your housing payment, just be prepared to compromise. It’s not a free lunch — you give up some privacy and personal space. In return, you can supercharge your savings rate and put more money towards investments and financial independence and early retirement. Getting the money for a house hack in an expensive city like Los Angeles can be challenging, but there are multiple options available.

Regardless, these expenses can add up and likely differ on a case-by-case basis. A young couple with a small space might not have the room to store all their gifts. Or, someone living in the city in a small one-bedroom apartment might want to pay for extra storage for another year or two until they manage to buy a house in the suburbs.

I’ll also share my strategies for increasing the chances of making your house hacking efforts successful. In this blog post, we’ll explain what house hacking is, its pros and cons, and how you can get started. Of course, house hacking isn't for everyone, so you'll have to weigh the pros and cons.

How 'The Fall of the House of Usher' Adapts Edgar Allan Poe

edgar allen poe house of usher

As Roderick recounts his decades-spanning tale, Auggie can hear the sound of what Roderick says is his twin sister, Fortunato COO Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), banging around in the house's basement. Roderick's story largely flits between his early years working at Fortunato and the events that led up to each of his children's deaths. But he begins by jumping back in time to his own childhood to explain how he and Madeline came to accidentally bury their mother (Annabeth Gish) alive before she broke free from her premature grave to exact revenge on their father, onetime Fortunato CEO William Longfellow (Robert Longstreet).

Is The Fall of the House of Usher based on a true story?

Summoned to the House of Usher by a “wildly importunate letter,” which “gaveevidence of nervous agitation,” the first-person narrator goes to reside for atime with the writer of this letter, Roderick Usher. Although Roderick had beenone of his “boon companions in boyhood,” the narrator confesses early in thestory that “I really knew little of my friend”; yet, by the end of this gothictale, he has learned more about the occupants of the House of Usher than he isequipped to deal with. As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house.

Character descriptions

American author Edgar Allan Poe wrote the Gothic short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” in 1839. It first appeared in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine published in 1839 and in Poe’s collection of short stories Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque in 1840. Poe is considered one of the founders of Gothic and Romantic literature in the United States.

I learned, moreover, at intervals, and through broken and equivocal hints, another singular feature of his mental condition. The windows were long, narrow, and pointed, and at so vast a distance from the black oaken floor as to be altogether inaccessible from within. Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellissed panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects around; the eye, however, struggled in vain to reach the remoter angles of the chamber, or the recesses of the vaulted and fretted ceiling. Many books and musical instruments lay scattered about, but failed to give any vitality to the scene. An air of stern, deep, and irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all. Just like in the episode, Poe's short story of the same name features a party thrown by a character called Prospero (played in the series by Sauriyan Sapkota) which is crashed by a mysterious masked figure.

Text: Edgar Allan Poe, “The Fall of the House of Usher”

His countenance was, as usual, cadaverously wan — but, moreover, there was a species of mad hilarity in his eyes — an evidently restrained hysteria in his whole demeanor. His air appalled me — but anything was preferable to the solitude which I had so long endured, and I even welcomed his presence as a relief. One of the phantasmagoric conceptions of my friend, partaking not so rigidly of the spirit of abstraction, may be shadowed forth, although feebly, in words.

The belief, however, was connected (as I have previously hinted) with the gray stones of the home of his forefathers. Its evidence — the evidence of the sentience — was to be seen, he said, (and I here started as he spoke,) in the gradual yet certain condensation of an atmosphere of their own about the waters and the walls. The result was discoverable, he added, in that silent, yet importunate and terrible influence which for centuries had moulded the destinies of his family, and which made him what I now saw him — what he was. It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him.

Episode 4, "The Black Cat"

It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said — it was the apparent heart that went with his request — which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons. At the request of Usher, I personally aided him in the arrangements for the temporary entombment. It had been used, apparently, in remote feudal times, for the worst purposes of a donjon-keep, and, in later days, as a place of deposit for powder, or some other highly combustible substance, as a portion of its floor, and the whole interior of a long archway through which we reached it, were carefully sheathed with copper. Its immense weight caused an unusually sharp grating sound, as it moved upon its hinges. The narrator quickly closes the window and tells Usher that it is merely an electrical phenomenon or gases expelled from the tarn. The story describes a hero, Ethelred, who breaks down the door to an evil hermit’s dwelling after being denied entrance (21).

In the flashbacks to Roderick's earlier life, his boss at Fortunato, Rufus Griswold (Michael Trucco), shares his name with a real-life contemporary and critic of Poe's, while Roderick's first wife, Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), bears the moniker of Poe's renowned 1849 poem about a young love cut short by tragedy. Mike Flanagan never met a haunted house he didn’t want to peel back the wallpaper on and see what horrors lurk beneath. Contemporary readers and critics interpreted the story as a somewhat sensationalized account of Poe’s supposed madness.

Premiering Oct. 12, House of Usher is Flanagan's fifth spooky anthology series for the streamer, following in the wake of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club. And like its predecessors—with the exception of Midnight Mass—House of Usher is based on the work of a renowned horror author. Once upon a midnight dreary—or for those on the East Coast, 3 a.m.—horror maestro Mike Flanagan's new Edgar Allan Poe-inspired anthology series, The Fall of the House of Usher, arrived on Netflix. Flanagan’s latest house of horrors is a work of fiction, one that’s deeply inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The stories all weave together to form the Usher family’s downfall, but some members of the show’s cast have individual chillers they’re partial to. Long considered Edgar Allan Poe‘s masterpiece, “The Fall of the House of Usher” continues to intrigue new generations of readers.

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name. But the series also folds in references to other works by Poe, including the author's classic 1845 poem "The Raven" and enduring horror stories like 1842's "The Pit and the Pendulum," 1843's "The Tell-Tale Heart," and 1846's "The Cask of Amontillado." With this foreboding introduction, we enter the interior through a Gothic portal with the narrator. With him we encounter Roderick Usher, who has changed drastically since last the narrator saw him. His cadaverous appearance, his nervousness, his mood swings, his almost extrahuman sensitivity to touch, sound, taste, smell, and light, along with the narrator’s report that he seems lacking in moral sense, portrays a deeply troubled soul. We learn, too, that his twin sister, Madeline, a neurasthenic woman like her brother, is subject to catatonic trances.

This traveler, also the first-person narrator and boyhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the house, has arrived in response to a summons from Usher. We share the narrator’s responses to the gloomy mood and the menacing facade of the House of Usher, noticing, with him, the dank lake that reflects the house (effectively doubling it, like the Usher twins we will soon meet) and apprehensively viewing the fissure, or crack, in the wall. Very soon we understand that, whatever else it may mean, the house is a metaphor for the Usher family itself and that if the house is seriously flawed, so are its occupants.

Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family. In a shocking development, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and enters the room, and Roderick confesses that he buried her alive. Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. The story is narrated by a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the Usher mansion.

(As a recluse, Poe often invited such accusations.) Later scholarship pursued alternative interpretations. Some scholars speculated that Poe may have attached special importance to the fact that Roderick and Madeline are twins, noting that Poe previously investigated the phenomenon of the double in “Morella” (1835) and “William Wilson” (1839). Other scholars pointed to the work as an embodiment of Poe’s doctrine of l’art pour l’art (“art for art’s sake”), which held that art needs no moral, political, or didactic justification. Further, Roderick believes that his fate is connected to the family mansion. As if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell — the huge antique pannels to which the speaker pointed, threw slowly back, upon the instant, their ponderous and ebony jaws. It was the work of the rushing gust — but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher.

Poe's Stories

Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher. He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions.

A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’

The death of Frederick Usher (Henry Thomas), which is caused by a pendulous piece of building material swinging slowly down to cut him open, is almost straight out of Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum". But Frederick's removal of his wife's teeth, one of the most disturbing and WTF moments of the entire show, appears to have been loosely inspired by a story called "Berenice". That grim tale sees a man obsessing over cousin's teeth and eventually removing them after she dies. At Roderick’s words, the door bursts open, revealing Madeline all in white with blood on her robes. With a moan, she falls on her brother, and, by the time they hit the floor, both Roderick and Madeline are dead.

Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead — for we could not regard her unawed. The disease which had thus entombed the lady in the maturity of youth, had left, as usual in all maladies of a strictly cataleptical character, the mockery of a faint blush upon the bosom and the face, and that suspiciously lingering smile upon the lip which is so terrible in death. We replaced and screwed down the lid, and, having secured the door of iron, made our way, with toil, into the scarcely less gloomy apartments of the upper portion of the house.

Episode 4, "The Black Cat"

edgar allen poe house of usher

Its proprietor, Roderick Usher, had been one of my boon companions in boyhood; but many years had elapsed since our last meeting. A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country — a letter from him — which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness — of a mental disorder which oppressed him — and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady.

The now ghastly pallor of the skin, and the now miraculous lustre of the eye, above all things startled and even awed me. The silken hair, too, had been suffered to grow all unheeded, and as, in its wild gossamer texture, it floated rather than fell about the face, I could not, even with effort, connect its Arabesque expression with any idea of simple humanity. Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” wasoriginally published in September of 1839. In the tale, the narrator visits achildhood friend who is sick and in need of company.

Episode 2, "The Masque of the Red Death"

This friend is riding to the house, having been summoned by Roderick Usher, having complained in his letter that he is suffering from some illness and expressing a hope that seeing his old friend will lift his spirits. His behavior becomes even more erratic and distracted, and it begins to affect the narrator’s own mental state. One stormy night, the narrator cannot sleep and begins to have inexplicable feelings of terror.

In the show, Usher family patriarch and Fortunato CEO Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites assistant U.S. attorney C. Roderick grows more erratic in his behaviour, and the narrator reads to his friend to try to soothe him. The plot of the romance (a fictional title invented by Poe himself, called ‘Mad Trist’) concerns a hero named Ethelred who enters the house of a hermit and slays a dragon. The story begins with the narrator on his way to visit his old friend, Roderick Usher, who has sent a letter requesting the narrator’s company.

We sat down; and for some moments, while he spoke not, I gazed upon him with a feeling half of pity, half of awe. Surely, man had never before so terribly altered, in so brief a period, as had Roderick Usher! It was with difficulty that I could bring myself to admit the identity of the wan being before me with the companion of my early boyhood. And now in the mere exaggeration of the prevailing character of these features, and of the expression they were wont to convey, lay so much of change that I doubted to whom I spoke.

And now, some days of bitter grief having elapsed, an observable change came over the features of the mental disorder of my friend. He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue — but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance. There were times, indeed, when I thought his unceasingly agitated mind was laboring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage. At times, again, I was obliged to resolve all into the mere inexplicable vagaries of madness, for I beheld him gazing upon vacancy for long hours, in an attitude of the profoundest attention, as if listening to some imaginary sound.

Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state. Throwing the windows open to the storm, Roderick points out that the lake surrounding the house seems to glow in the dark, just as Roderick depicted in his paintings, but there is no lightning or other explainable source of the glow.

I felt creeping upon me, by slow yet certain degrees, the wild influences of his own fantastic yet impressive superstitions. During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was — but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart — an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it — I paused to think — what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher?

Although there isn't one particular story that closely resembles the plot of "A Midnight Dreary" — it's taken from the opening lines of "The Raven" and that's a whole other story that bookends the Netflix series — "The Premature Burial" and "Morella" both spring to mind. In the first, the narrator has a phobia of being buried alive (taphophobia) but recounts the tale of a woman who endures exactly that, then is resurrected. In the second, a man watches his wife deteriorate and die before ultimately finding no trace of her in her tomb. Both share parallels with Roderick and Madeline's mother, Eliza (Annabeth Gish), who climbs out of her fresh grave for a final act of vengeance.

Oscan lengthened the second small vertical stroke found in the Umbrian form, and the result was similar to the Greek Π. Throughout its known history it has represented the unvoiced labial stop. It corresponds to the Semitic pe, perhaps deriving from an earlier sign for "mouth." The Greeks renamed this form pi (Π). A common digraph in English is ⟨ph⟩, which represents the sound /f/, and can be used to transliterate ⟨φ⟩ phi in loanwords from Greek.

English

The minuscule letter resembles the majuscule, the chief difference being that the loop is brought down to the level of the line of writing and the vertical stroke is extended below the line. The English initial p is slightly aspirated—that is, it is accompanied by a slight puff of breath—in contrast to the unaspirated p of French, for example. Initial p is silent in the combinations ps and pt in such Greek-derived words as psychology and pterodactyl. A rounded form occurred in the early Greek inscriptions from the island of Thera. The standard rounded form in the Latin alphabet was evidently borrowed from the Etruscan, but the colonial Latin alphabet of the 3rd century bce also shows an angular form resembling the Chalcidic. The Umbrian alphabet had a two-stroke form that recalled the ancient Semitic, and Faliscan had a rounded form that resembled a modern P flipped right-to-left.

In German, the digraph ⟨pf⟩ is common, representing a labial affricate /pf/. The Semitic Pê (mouth), as well as the Greek Π or π (Pi), and the Etruscan and Latin letters that developed from the former alphabet, all symbolized /p/, a voiceless bilabial plosive.
